PURPOSE: To study the macular thickness using optical coherence topography (OCT) in eyes with diabetic retinopathy.
METHODS: Observational study of 75 patients with diabetic retinopathy findings on Indirect ophthalmoscopy. The patients were then evaluated using OCT and the macular thickness at the fovea was noted. Visual acuity was also noted. The patients were also classified as per ETDRS classification.
RESULT: On OCT, out of 75, 38 patients showed macular thickness in the range of 200 to 300 microns. 25 patients showed thickness in the range of 300-400 microns. 12 patients with macular thickness above 400 microns. 20 patients showed Mild Diabetic retinopathy, 18 patients showed moderate diabetic retinopathy,15 patients presented with severe and 10 with very severe diabetic retinopathy.
CONCLUSION: Macular thickness shows a proportionate increase with the stage of the disease. Also, the visual acuity is inversely proprtional to the macular thickness.
