Purpose:
To preserve the limbal tissue in penetrating keratoplasty for sclerocornea and thus facilitate early epithelization and prevent graft vascularization and rejection.
Methods:
3 years old female child presented with bilateral sclerocornea. Left eye 360 degrees conjunctival peritomy was done. The limbal tissue was harvested. The left eye penetrating keratoplasty was done. At the end of surgery the limbus was reposited back to the graft host junction and glued using fibrin glue to the newly formed limbus. The conjunctiva was also reposited back to the newly formed limbus. Left eye followed by right eye surgery was done.
Results:
Postoperatively in both eyes the corneal grafts are clear and well epithelized.
Conclusion:
The large corneal graft gives a good cosmetic outcome and the limbus preservation facilitates early epithelization. The preserved limbus decreases the chance of vascularization.
