Purpose-Understanding the cause of posterior astigmatism.Methods-It has been verified that the posterior curvature of cornea contributes to half a diopter of against the rule on the anterior corneal surface in about 80% cases and remains stable throughout life. The cause of this phenomena remains elusive.Neverthless, this may have a significant impact on the outcomes of toric IOL implantation, leading to undesirable and unpredictable results. Results-The purpose of this video is to attempt to find an explanation for the cause of posterior astigmatism and propose a “cast- mould” theory of the origin of posterior corneal astigmatism. According to this theory, the posterior curvature of the cornea mirrors the anterior curvature of the lens , when both the surfaces are apposed with each other during the embryological development of the anterior segment of the eye.Conclusion-This educational film would help the clinicians understand the concepts of corneal astigmatism in a better way.
