Soft skills are a cluster of productive personality traits that characterize one’s relationship in a milieu. In the present scenario the practice of medicine is becoming highly technical without a recognition of the many emotional and behavioural dynamics. The SINGLE most important soft skill is the art of listening to patients and our colleagues. A simple act of leaning forward, having a smile, being empathetic and patiently listening to the patient before rushing to examine will go a long way in gaining the confidence of the patient. At our workplace we are part of a team,be it a unit or speciality clinic, we should genuinely encourage and support our colleagues.Maintaining a strong work ethic in the care and service of the patient is vital. We need to see the bigger picture even during difficult days.Flexibility, effective time management are the key elements of overall success. We need to project with self confidence in our abilities.
