Hemifacial spasm is an involuntary irregular clonic-tonic movements of the muscles innervated by cranial nerve VII on one side of the face. Botulinum toxin is a safe and effective treatment of hemifacial spasm.
This video shows that the presentation can vary from the contractions of orbicularis oculi to involvement of other muscles of face to the involvement of frontalis and platysma and therefore assessement of the muscles involved helps individualise the treatment for each patient. It also highlights that disabling complications can be avoided by having a good knowledge of the anatomy of facial muscles and its relations. It demonstrates that understanding the optimal injection sites, injection techniques, time intervals and administering low dosage per injection site increases the duration of response, reduces the incidence and severity of side effects and also the total number of injections and hence improves the quality of life in patients.
