The slit-lamp, or biomicroscope, is the single most important objective instrument for every ophthalmologist, allowing detailed examination of the anterior segment of the eye. The ability to carry out expert slit lamp microscopy can only be attained by extensive practice of techniques in conjunction with, familiarity with the instruments and its controls, a thorough knowledge of the range of normal appearances seen in patients and clear understanding of the various techniques of illumination used to diagnose different pathologies. This video aims to be a precise guide for every new ophthalmologist, describing in detail about the nuances and pitfalls of each illumination technique. Parts of the slit lamp, uses of different filters, various illumination techniques for evaluation of cornea, anterior chamber, lens and tear film is dealt with in detail. Apart from the normal findings, ocular pathologies diagnosed using slit lamp is also demonstrated.
