AIM:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the epidemiology in traumatic childhood cataract in western India.
METHODS:
In thisprospective interventional cohort, demographic parameters and history including type of injury of children younger than 18 years with traumatic cataract were recorded; ocular examination included BCVA, Anterior segment and posterior segment evaluation.
RESULTS:
Out of 1076 eyes, 762 were male and 314 were female, Mean age was 2 years.540 Right eyes and 536 left eyes, 2 cases were bilateral. Wooden stick was the most common causal agent. Open-globe injury (OGI) were 405 whilst CGI were 671. Morphology showed Membranous cataract in 133(12.4%),rosette 42(3.9%), soft-fluffy 491(45.6%), Total cataract 399 (37.1%) and Subuxated len in 11(1%).
CONCLUSIONS:
Wooden stick injury caused the maximum cases of traumatic cataract;males are more commonly affected. Closed globe injury with soft fluffy morphology was most commonly seen.
