PURPOSE-Exploring a novel chemical cross linker as an alternative to C3R. METHODS -Assessment of novel chemical cross linker on (1) Cytotoxicity: Chemically treated and untreated epithelial, stromal and endothelial cells harvested from explants are subjected to Resazurin assay and Live dead assay. (2)Mechanical properties of corneas like (1) Tensile strength and (2) Young’s modulus. The corneas (7 normal and 5 keratoconus buttons) were treated and compared with the untreated corneas (5 normal and 6 keratoconus) using Universal testing machine Instron 3345.RESULTS- Treatment with the cross-linkers did not result in any noticeable changes in cell viability.A 21% increase in tensile strength and 2.8 times increase in stiffness(young’s modulus) of the normal treated corneas and 74% increase in tensile strength and 3.3 times increase in stiffness in treated keratoconic corneas compared to the untreated. CONCLUSION -The novel chemical cross linker can be a future alternative for C3R.
